28th Annual Forum on Child Abuse and Neglect
On Friday, April 27, in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Indiana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), and its community partners, will host the 28th Annual Forum on Child Abuse and Neglect, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Theater at the Arts & Sciences Building.
The theme for this year’s free event is “Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma, Resilience and Hope.”
The day will begin with registration and continental breakfast from 8:15 and 9 a.m., followed by introductory remarks by Elizabeth Guzman-Arredondo of Calumet College of St. Joseph, Marshelia Harris of IU Northwest’s School of Social Work, Ellis Dumas of the Indiana Department of Child Services, and IU Northwest Chancellor William J. Lowe.
This year's forum will feature a keynote address by Author Shenadoah Chefalo who will present “Garbage Bag Suitcase: A Survivor’s Guide to the Long-Term Impact of Kids in Care.”
Chefalo is a child advocate and author of Garbage Bag Suitcase: A Memoir. She will share her “wholly dysfunctional journey” through a childhood with neglectful drug- and alcohol-addicted parents. She will talk about how the trauma that she experienced remains with her today and how some of the coping skills that she developed in her childhood have not always been productive in her adult life. But her accomplishments (author, speaker, administrator, advocacy group leader) show that hers is mainly a story of the triumph of resilience and hope. In her keynote address she will share her journey and present grass-roots approaches to improving child welfare services. Her purpose will be to motivate, educate, and create an open and honest discussion about the current foster care system and the life-changing improvements that are needed.
The forum will include workshops covering a variety of topics, including: a trauma-informed approach to coaching; human trafficking; gang education; sexual abuse prevention; legal and social services issues of immigrants; behavioral and mental health services; issues related to sexual and gender identity; and much more.
There will be a presentation of the Prevent Child Abuse Lake County (PCALC) Annual Dr. Richard Hug Cherish the Children Award during the event’s closing plenary at 2:30 p.m. in the Theater at the Arts & Sciences Building. The plenary will close with a special surprise guest.
